Dieter Manstein, MD is instructor in dermatology at Harvard Medical School. He received his M.D. degree and a Masters in Physics from the University of Münster, Germany. He was introduced to laser medicine at the Institute of Medical Physics and Biophysics, Münster, where he performed his physics diploma thesis on the Excimer laser ablation of the cornea. After his dermatology residency in Ahaus, Germany he completed a research fellowship at the Wellman Center of Photomedicine in Boston and then joined the faculty of dermatology at the Harvard Medical School. There he conducts basic and clinical research to develop new laser applications and procedures in dermatology, including new techniques for skin rejuvenation, photoepilation and non-invasive removal of subcutaneous fat. Dr. Manstein invented Fractional Resurfacing and was the principal investigator of the first clinical study of this new concept. He also contributed to the Extended Theory of Selective Photothermolysis, developed new devices for photoepilation and introduced lipids as a new target and chromophore for selective photothermolysis.
